The table below (a subset of my main dataset containing all RN ships from the period 1840-1880) lists the principal unarmoured wooden screw warships of the Royal Navy.

Follow the links in the Name column for more details of the ship (origins of these names), and a potted summary of her career, and extracts from (generally the "Naval and Military Intelligence" column of) the Times newspaper.

Launch: for ships converted to the screw after launching as a sailing ship dates between (....) are the year of undocking after conversion (or completion if the date of undocking is unknown); the date of launching as a sailing (or, in the case of Phoenix, as a paddle) ship is given in the Note column.
Type: in 1862 and again in 1876 groups of sloops were reclassified as corvettes (but both designations are to found for these vessels in contemporary literature for a considerable period thereafter).
Class: early in the period ships of the same (nominal) class sometimes showed quite considerable differences; authorities do not always agree on the allocation of early ships to classes, or on the name ship of the class.
Guns: initial number of guns; authorities quite often differ on this; this armament was frequently changed (generally to a smaller number of larger guns).
Last: year of paying off after last full commission for sea or coastguard service (i.e. not as stationary harbour flagship, training ship etc.); '-' = never in full commission.
Fate: year of (sale for) breaking up or of loss.
Note: "Converted on the stocks" implies a change to design for the screw at any time between laying of the keel and launching.
