Th 17 April 1873 | The following ships have been ordered home from the undermentioned stations to be paid out of commission The Cossack, 16, screw corvette, 1,296 tons, 230-horse power, Capt. R.G. Douglas, from the Australian station (this vessel was commissioned at Sheerness in December, 1868, by Capt. J.E. Parish, for service in the East Indies); the Racoon, 18,screw corvette, 1,447 tons, 400-horse power, Capt. Edward H. Howard, from North America and the West Indies (this vessel was paid off at Bermuda on the 6th of May, 1870, by Lieut. R.M. Sperling, now of the Devastation, and was re-commissioned by her present commander on the following day); the Supply, 2, iron steam storeship, 638 tons, 84-horse power, from Cadiz (she ran on a reef of rocks off Cape Pallas, on the West Coast of Africa, on the 12th of last September, sustaining considerable damage; Staff Commander N.G. Arguimbau, on his retirement from the service, was succeeded in the command of this vessel on the 2d of December last by Staff Commander Richard T.N. Pearce, who is bringing the vessel home); and the Zealous, 20, armour-plated screw steamship, 3,716 tons 800-horse power (flagship of Rear-Admiral Arthur Farquhar), Capt. Francis A. Hume, from the Pacific. |
