- (His entry in O'Byrne's "Naval Biographical Dictionary" (1849):Francis Henry Stanfell entered the Navy 4 Nov. 1834; passed hisexamination in 1831; and as a reward for his services on the coast ofSyria, where he formed one of the landing party in the attack onTortosa, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant 5 Nov 1840. Hissucceeding appointments were- 15 Dec 1840, 27 Aug 1842, and 21 Dec,1843 to the Benbow 72, Capt. Houston Stewart, Orestes 18, Capts. HonSwynfn Thos. Carnegie, John Jas. Robinson, and Edw. St Leger Cannon,and Indus, 78, Capt. Sir Jas. Sterling, all on the Mediterraneanstation - and, 4 Feb 1845 (several months after the Indus had beenpaid off), to the Vanguard 80, Capts. Geo. Wickens Willes and Geo.Fred. Rich, with whom he was for upwards of three years employed inthe Channel and again in the Mediterranean.)
