| Sa 22 May 1875 | Yesterday the Prince of Wales paid a visit to Portsmouth. It had been announced that his Royal Highness would arrive at the Landport terminus at half-past 11, and then proceed to the Government House in the High-street and lunch with the Governor of Portsmouth, General Sir Hastings Doyle. The Royal party, however. which consisted of the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar, and their respective suites, did not arrive from the Victoria Station until an hour later, and instead of proceeding to Government House were conveyed direct to the dockyard by rail, to the great disappointment of the crowds who thronged the line of route originally determined upon. The distinguished party were met at the Dockyard by the two Admirals, the Chief Constructor, and other officials, and conducted through the Discovery and the Alert, Arctic vessels. Having made a cursory inspection of the ships they next walked through the Arctic Exhibition on the Watering Island, after which they were driven to the Government House, where General Doyle had prepared luncheon. ... At the conclusion of the luncheon the Prince and his party were again taken to the Dockyard, where his Royal Highness carefully inspected the iron troopship, the Serapis, which has been selected to convey him to India. The Serapis has just had new boilers and undergone a complete overhaul, but it is expected that considerable alterations will have to be made to adapt her for the voyage. His Royal Highness will occupy the grand saloon, and it is expected that another deckhouse will have to be constructed. The Royal party left at half-past 4 for London. | ||
