Sa 24 December 1842The Hyacinth, 18, Commander G. Goldsmith; Herald, 26, Captain Joseph Nias; Modeste, 18, Commander R. Watson; Favourite, 18, Commander Thomas Sullivan; Columbine, 16, Commander W.H.A. Morshead; Chamelion, 10, Lieutenant Commander G. Hunter; and the Algerine, 10, Lieutenant Commander W.H. Maitland, forming part of the squadron now in China and the East Indies, are under orders to proceed to England, as soon as the arrangements entered into between this country and China are perfected. Most of these ships have been in commission five years, and some of them nearly six.
Ma 16 January 1843The Blonde, 42. Captain Sir Thomas Bourchier, K.C.B., embarked 3,000,000 dollars at Chusan en the 16th of September, being half the amount of the first instalment paid by the Chinese Government, under the late treaty; the remaining 3,000,000 were embarked at the same time in equal proportions, on board the Herald, 26, Captain Joseph Nias, C.B., Clio, 16, Captain N. Troubridge, Columbine, 16, Captain W.H.A. Morshead, and Modeste, 18, Captain Rundle Watson. The Blonde may now be shortly expected home.
Tu 28 February 1843'Devonport, Feb. 26. - Arrived, Her Majesty's ship Modeste, from China, left Hong Kong October 23, St, Helena, January 6, with 1,000,000 dollars on board..
Ma 6 March 1843

The Modeste, 18, Captain Rundle B. Watson, which arrived from China on Thursday, is to bs paid off at Sheerness. It is a singular coincidence, that while Sir Henry Pottinger was in China so instrumental to the treaty with that empire, his brother, Major William Pottinger, at present in command of the 6th Regiment, stationed here, should be destined to receive the first payment of the ransom given under that treaty. The amount brought by the Modeste is about 800,000 dollars, which was despatched by railway to London on Friday, under the escort of a party of the 6th under the command of Lieutenant Finley. A number of seamen, gunners from the Excellent, will go round to Sheerness in the Modeste, for distribution in the Curaçoa, Hecla, and Camperdown.
