14 November 1919 | ADMIRAL C.J. ROWLEY. The death occurred last Tuesday, at Holmesland, Botley, Hants, of Admiral Charles John Rowley, aged 86.Admiral Rowley was born on December 24, 1832, and the family of which he was a member has given many gallant and notable officers of the Royal Navy. He was the second son of Captain R.S. Rowley. R.N., a grandson of Sir Charles Rowley, Admiral of the White, and a great-grandson of Sir Joshua Rowley, Rear-Admiral of the Red, both these officers being made baronets for their distinguished services afloat. Admiral Rowley entered the Navy in 1844, and was made a lieutenant 10 years later. In this rank, while serving in the Curlew and St. Jean d’Acre, he was present at the operations before Sebastopol during the war. With Russia in 1854-55, and took part in the Azofff expedition and the capture of Kimburn Kertch Yemikali. For these services he received the Crimean Medal with the Azoff and Sebastopol clasps, and Turkish decoratiöns. He was promoted commander in March, 1861. and. Captain on July 5, 1866, commanding, among other vessels, the Pallas and Iron Duke. He was Advanced to flag rank in July, 1884, and from 1887 to 1888 was second in command of the Channel Squadron. He was further Advanced to vice-admiral in 1890, and admiral in 1895. He retired in 1897. From 1882 to 1884 he was A.D.C. to Quêen Victoria. Admiral Rowley married, in 1867, Alice, daughter of the late George Cary Elwes, Fellow of All Souls, and had a son and a daughter. The funeral will take place at Botley Church at 2.55 to-morrow. |
