4 December 1883 | Admiral George Sumner Hand, C.B., died on Saturday at his residence in the Albany, Piccadilly. The deceased was born in 1807, and, having entered the Navy at an early age, was appointed. to the command of a boat at the capture of the fortress of Donobew, in Ava, in 1825. He served also on board the Espoir on the west coast of Africa from 1844 to 1850, in the Naval Brigade at the attack on Canton in 1857, and took part in the storming of Narntow in 1858. The gallant officer obtained the rank of captain in 1852, and was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1867, Vice-Admiral in 1873, and Admiral in 1879. He was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath (Military Division) in 1859. and was placed on the retired list in 1867. |
