18 July 1888We have to announce the death of Admiral the Hon. Sir Edward Alfred John Harris, K.C.B., brother of the Earl of Malmesbury, which occurred at Sondling-park, his seat near Hythe, Kent, at an early hour yesterday morning. Sir Edward was the second of the three sons of James Edward, second Earl of Malmesbury, by Harriet Susan, daughter of the late Mr. Francis Bateman Dashwood, of Well Vale, Lincolnshire, and was born in 1808. He was educated at Eton and at the Royal Naval College. In 1823 he joined the Isis as midshipman. He accompanied an expedition against the pirates of Grabura, in the Grecian Archipelago. For some years — namely, from 1844 to 1852, he represented Christchurch in Parliament. In 1852 he was appointed British Consul for Denmark. In the same year he became Chargé d’Affaires and Consul-General for the Republic of Peru, in 1853 Consul-General for the Republic of Chili, in 1858 Consul-General for the Austrian coasts of the Adriatic Sea, and in the same year Minister at Berne, and while there was promoted to be Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in 1859. He was appointed in a similar capacity to the King of the Netherlands in 1867. In recognition of his civil services the late Admiral was made a Knight Commander of the Bath in 1872, and in 1877 retired on a pension. His commissions in the Navy bore date as follows:— Lieutenant, February, 1828; Commander, November, 1833; Captain, November, 1841; Rear-Admiral, April, 1862; Vice-Admiral, May, 1867; and Admiral on the Reserved list, 1877. He was a Deputy-Lieutenant and magistrate for Hants. The late Sir Edward married in August, 1841, Emma Wyly, youngest daughter of the late Captain Samuel Chambers.
