15 May 1917 | REAR-ADMIRAL SIR L LORAINE, Rear-Admiral Sir Lambton Loraine, 11th baronet, of Kirkharle, died on Sunday, in his 79th year. He was born at Fawdon, Northumberland, and succeeded to the title on the death of his father in 1852. The same year he entered the Navy, and served as sub-lieutenant on Queen Victoria's yacht. In 1858 he was raised to the rank of lieutenant; in 1867 he was made commander, and in 1874 captain. In 1871 he received the congratulations of the Government for notable services rendered at Santiago de Cuba. In 1873 he was given the Freedom of the City of New York for services rendered to the United States, In the same year Sir Lambton Loraine was in command at the bombardment of Omoa Castle, Honduras.Sir Lambton Loraine was the first chairman of the Standing Council of the Baronetage. He married, in 1878, a daughter of Captain Charles Acton Broke, R.E., and co-heiress of the Brokes of Nacton. He is succeeded by his second son, Percy Lyham Loraine, born in 1880, who served in the South African War. He was appointed attaché at Constantinople in 1904, was Second Secretary at Paris from 1912 to 1916, and was appointed First Secretary at Madrid last year. |
