18 November 1865Vice-Admiral Sir Horatio Thomas Austin, K.C.B., expired on Thursday morning at his residence in Leinster-gardens, in his 65th year, after a very short illness. He entered the navy in 1813. According to O'Byrne he served as first-class volunteer and midshipman under Capt. Sir Thomas M. Hardy and Capt. Sir Charles Ogle, with whom he witnessed the chief operations of the American war. In 1824 he became first lieutenant of the Ruby sloop, Capt. H.P. Hoppner, and took part in Capt. Parry's second expedition in search of a North-West Passage. In 1827 he was appointed to the Chanticleer surveying vessel, and on the death of Capt. H. Foster he succeeded to the acting command. He obtained the command of the Salamander in November, 1832. After obtaining post rank he was appointed, in November, 1839, to the Cyclops, in which vessel he took part in the operations on the coast of Syria. For his services on the coast of Syria he was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath. The deceased admiral held various commands up to April, 1863, when he was appointed Admiral Superintendent of Malta dockyard, which he held up to November last year. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in March last. His commissions bore date as follows:- Lieut., Sept. 9, 1822; Commander, May 26, 1831; Capt., June 28, 1838; Rear-Admiral, Nov. 28, 1857; and Vice-Admiral, Oct. 20,1864.
