| 3 January 1893 | Admiral Thomas B. Lethbridge died in London on Friday evening. He was born in 1828 and entered the Navy as a cadet at the age of 14. He became lieutenant in October, 1848, after passing a very successful examination in gunnery. He was promoted to the rank of commander in 1857 from the Excellent, gunnery training-ship at Portsmouth, and was afterwards appointed to the wooden steam line of battleship Renown on her completion for sea at Sheerness early in 1858. She was accounted one of the smartest vessels in the service, and Commander Lethbridge was with her when attached to the Channel Squadron, and also when she finished her commission in the Mediterranean. He was posted in September, 1863, and was flag-captain to Admiral Hancock and Admiral Phillimore successively in the Northumberland and the Black Prince, and to Sir William King Hall at Sheerness. Obtaining a captain's good-service pension in September, 1875, he held it until December, 1878, when he was promoted to flag-rank. Admiral Lethbridge was never in command of a squadron, but as rear-admiral he was senior officer on the coast of Ireland from 1883-5, and as vice-admiral he was commander-in-chief at the Nore in succession to Admiral Waddilove. This appointment he held from 1888 to 1890 when he retired from the service with the rank of admiral. He resided at Southsea, and was at the time of his death chairman of the Portsmouth branch of the National lifeboat Institution. |
