18 June 1920 | VICE-ADMIRAL S.P. TOWNSEND. The death has occurred at his residence, The Grange, Fareham. of Vice-Admiral Samuel Philip Townsend, aged 89 years.Admiral Townsend entered the Navy in 1844, was promoted captain in 1868, and retired in 1883, being promoted to flag rank on the retired list two years later. As lieutenant of the Sanspareil he was present at the attack on the ports of Sevastopol, and served with the naval brigade attached to Sir Colin Campbell's division. He commanded the Boxer from 1855 to 1858, and was present at the operations in the Sea of Azoff and at the attack and capture of Kinburn. He was mentioned three times in dispatches. |
