Album
This leather-bound album (14 x 11 cm; click on the images to see larger versions) contains photographs of the commissioned officers of HMS Emerald in 1861 (see here for a complete list of all officers serving during the commission of 14 May 1859 - 7 Nov 1863).
Album

In old age William Loney sent it (together with the portrait) to his niece Annie to prevent it "falling into strange hands". Unfortunately the accompanying letter was not dated, but in an enclosure he briefly gives the “present whereabouts” of the officers as gleaned from “a late Navy List”, and this allows an estimate of the date of sending to be made: the reference to Lord Walter Kerr being a Vice Admiral and Second Naval Lord seems to date the document to the period 20 February to 26 May 1895.

Click on the officers name to see the photo and biographical details (if available). The information in the last four columns is taken from the relevant muster book of HMS Emerald (ADM 38/8031 in the National Archives); note that the dates of actual joining and leaving can differ from the dates the officer was commissioned to the ship. I assume that Portsmouth and Sheerness in the 'Joined' column refer to the ports, and not to ships of that name.
