| We 7 March 1849 | Portsmouth, March 6. The Sappho, 12, Commander R.C. Michell, was towed to Spithead at 7 15 a.m. to-day by the Echo steam-tug. Her crew were mustered and inspected by Admiral the Hon. Sir Bladen Capel, K.C.B., in the afternoon. After safely depositing the Sappho at Spithead, the Echo returned into harbour, and, in conjunction with the Janus, took the Superb, 80, Captain E. Purcell, out. In proceeding down the harbour the Superb took a slight shear, which brought her in contact with a collier brig, the lo, of Sunderland, which vessel was lying too near the fairway, and the loss of the brig's main topmast and fore topgallant mast was the result — the spars snapping off like pipe stems. | ||
