15 March 1888Vice-Admiral Spratt, who died on the 10th inst. at Tunbridge Wells, was born in 1811, and was the son of Captain James Spratt, R.N. Entering the service in 1827, he received his lieutenant's commission 14 years after (1841). In 1851 he was in charge of the Mediterranean Survey, and was afterwards many years in the surveying service. He was in command of Her Majesty’s ship Spitfire in the Black Sea throughout the Russian war of 1854 and 1855, being present at the bombardment of Sebastopol. The deceased officer planned the attacks for the capture of Kertch and also Kinburn, and placed buoys for both fleets at the latter battle and led them to their positions. He was specially mentioned by Sir C. Lyons for his services during the Crimean war, besides receiving the Baltic, Crimean, and Turkish medals and the Azof clasp. The deceased officer was Special Commissioner of Fisheries from 1866 to 1873, and had been acting conservator of the Mersey since 1879. He was the author of "Travels and Researches in CreteExternal link,” and with the late Professor E. Forbes was the joint author of "Travels in Lycia." He was created a C.B. in 1855. Vice-Admiral Spratt was a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a Fellow of the Geological Society, being also an officer of the Legion of Honour. He had likewise received the Fourth Class of the Medjidie.
