22 February 1888We regret to announce the death, at the age of 78, of Admiral Sir William Edmonstone, which occurred at his residence in Edinburgh on Saturday last. He was the eldest surviving son of the late Sir Charles Edmonstone, of Buntreath, who died in 1821, by his second wife, the Hon. Louisa, the youngest daughter of Beaumont, second Lord Hotham. The deceased was born in 1810, and succeeded his half-brother as fourth baronet in 1871. He married, in 1841, Mary Elizabeth, the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Parsons, and was Conservative M.P. for Stirlingshire from 1874 till 1880, when he was defeated at the general election. He was a deputy-lieutenant for the same county. In the House of Commons Admiral Edmonstone was unremitting in his attendance. He spoke very seldom — indeed, it is said, but once — but he was noticeable for the assiduous fidelity with which he cheered the utterances from the Ministerial bench. Admiral Edmonstone entered the Royal Navy in 1822, and received his lieutenant's commission seven yean after. He was severely wounded when a midshipman of the Sybille in a boat action with pirates in the Archipelago in 1826. His commissions bore date as follow: — Commander, 1841; captain, 1853: rear-admiral, 1867; vice-admiral, 1876; admiral, 1880. Deceased retired from the service in 1870, and was made a C.B. in 1863.
