| 24 April 1899 | Admiral Thomas Miller, retired, died on Saturday at Audley-mansions, Mount-street. A grand uncle of Sir William Frederick Miller, he was born in 1819, and entered the Navy in 1833. He commanded a gunboat and division of seamen at the destruction of piratical forts, &c., in Maluda Bay, Borneo, 1845, and in 1854 he was promoted for services as senior officer in the Bight of Benin. He received the thanks of the Governor of New Granada for important service rendered whilst captain of the Clio in saving the city of Panama from capture by a mob, April, 1860, and he also received the thanks of the French Government for his proceedings during a negro riot at Panama, November, 1860. When captain of the Royal George at Kingstown during the Fenian riots, 1867-68, he received the thanks of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for his services. In April, 1870, he was awarded a good service pension. Admiral Miller was a justice of the peace for the county and city of Dublin and was also a F.R.G.S. |
