22 October 1888Admiral the Hon. John Welbore Sunderland Spencer, whose death was briefly recorded in our columns on Saturday as having happened on the 17th inst. at Elmore-house, near Newbury, Berks, in the 73d year of his age, was the sixth son of Francis, first Lord Churchill, by his marriage with Lady Frances FitzRoy, daughter of the third Duke of Grafton, and younger brother of the second lord, and of General the Hon. Sir Augustus A. Spencer, G.C.B. He was born in March, 1816, and entered the Royal Navy as a cadet from the Naval College in 1830, passed his examination in 1835, and was promoted to lieutenant in 1841. He served for some years on the South African station, and subsequently with the Channel Squadron. He became a commander in 1847, and as captain was for some years in command of Her Majesty’s ship Topaze. He was promoted to rear-admiral in 1870, and placed on the retired list of that rank towards the close of the following year. He became a vice-admiral retired in January, 1877, and a retired admiral in 1886. From 1869 until he attained flag rank he was one of the Naval Aides-de-Camp to Her Majesty.
