| 3 November 1885 | Admiral Sir Augustus Leopold Kuper, K.C.B., whose death at the age of 76 has been already briefly announced in The Times, was born in 1809, entered the Nayy in his 14th year, and became a lieutenant before he was 21. In 1839 he rose to the rank of commander, and passed on through the usual grades in virtue of gallant services till in 1866 he was made a vice-admiral, and finally was promoted to be an Admiral in October 1872. Admiral Kuper, as commander of the Alligator, took part in the capture of Canton and Amoy, and was present at the attack on the Bogue forts and on the Chinese positions below Whampoa Reach in 1840-42. Twenty years later he engaged in the Euryalus in an expedition against the Taepings at Kah-ding and at the capture of that place in October 1862, and was commander-in-chief during the bombardments of Kagosima and Simonosaki, Japan. In addition to his other honours, Admiral Sir A. Kuper was a grand officer of the Legion of Honour, and a commander of the military order of William of the Netherlands, both conferred for services in conjunction with the forces of France and the Netherlands in the Straits of Simonosaki. |
