25 June 1912 | Admiral Loftus Jones. The death took place on Saturday evening at his residence, Hylton House, Petersfield, of Admiral Loftus Francis Jones, in his 76th year.He was a nephew of the late Admiral Sir Lewis T. Jones, and entered the Royal Navy in 1849, and served as cadet and midshipman in the Daedalus, Queen, and Tribune till 1855. He was acting mate of the Tribune in the Black Sea during the Russian War in 1655, receiving for his services the Crimean and Turkish medals with the Sebastopol clasp. He became a lieutenant in 1857, and served in the Termagant, Marlborough, Imperieuse, and Chesapeake till 1861. While in the latter two ships he acted as flag lieutenant to Admiral Sir Lewis T. Jones, and took part in the operations which ended in the capture of Peking (China medal). He was promoted to commander in 1861 and captain in 1870, and served in the Valorous, which accompanied, as escort ship, the Arctic expedition of 1875 under Sir George Nares as far as Disco, Greenland. From 1880 to 1882 he was senior officer in command of the South-East Coast of America Station, and was A.D.C. to Queen Victoria from 1885 to 1887, in which year he attained flag rank. In 1890-91 he was second in command of the Channel Squadron, and became Vice-Admiral in 1892 and Admiral in 1897. He received the Jubilee medal the same year, and retired at his own request in 1899. Admiral Jones leaves a widow, four sons, and two daughters. The funeral will take place at Petersfield at 2 p.m. on Thursday. |
