20 March 1918 | VICE-ADMIRAL POLAND. Vice-Admiral James Augustus Poland has died at 4, Cresswell-gardens, South Kensington, in his 86th year. He entered the Navy in 1846, and served in the Baltic and Black Sea during the Russian War, 1854-56, and in the China War, 1857-60. As senior lieutenant in H.M.S. Pearl he was present at the destruction of the forts of Kagosima, Japan, in 1863. From 1868 to 1871 he commanded H.M.S. Plover on the West Coast of Africa, and from 1875 to 1879 was in command of H.M.S. Juno on the China station. He retired in 1886, and became rear-admiral in 1888 and vice-admiral in 1893. |
