14 February 1865We have to record, the death of Admiral Sir Henry Byam Martin, K.C.B., whose death has been reported at the Admiralty as having taken place at Genoa on Thursday last. The late Admiral was second son of the late Admiral Sir T. Byam Martin, G.C.B., and was educated at the Royal Naval College. He first went to sea in October, 1818. After a long service afloat, he served in 1840 on board the Carysfort on the Coast of Syria, including the attacks on Fortosa and St. Jean d'Acre, and there obtained his decoration as a Commander of the Order of the Bath. He subsequently commanded the Grampus, 50, in the Pacific, and was made a K.C.B. for his services during the war with Russia in 1855. His commissions were dated as follows:- Lieut., March 20, 1823; Commandcr, April 8, 1825; Capt., April 28, 1827; Rear-Admiral. July 13, 1854; and Vice-Admiral June, 15, 1864. As he was on the active list of admirals there will be a promotion on the captains' list to flag rank.
