| 20 August 1885 | Vice-Admiral John James Kennedy, C.B., of Onslow-square, Kensington, died on Tuesday at Harrogate. A son of the late Venerable James Kennedy, Archdeacon of Waterford, he was born in 1821, and entered the Royal Navy at the usual age. He served in the China war of 1840-42, and in 1845 was present at the combined attack on Tamatave, Madagascar, and also served with the Naval Brigade for 12 months before SebastopoL He obtained the rank of commander in 1854, and was present at the battle of Inkerman and the capture of Kinburn. He commanded the Curlew in the Sea of Azof and at the attack on Gheisk. He was promoted to a captaincy in 1856, and as captain of the Challenger served in North America during the Civil War. He had charge of Fort San Juan d’Ulloa, Vera Cruz, during the occupation of Mexico, and in 1864 landed the seamen and marines at St. Vincent to assist in quelling a negro insurrection. He became a retired rear-admiral in 1874 and vice-admiral in 1879. Admiral Kennedy,who was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1857, married, in 1866, Isabella, daughter of the Rev. F. Evans, of the Byletts, Hereford. |
