26 October 1908 | Vice-Admiral Cortland Herbert Simpson, who died on October 24, at the Old Vicarage, Stoke-by-Neyland, Colchester, was a son of the late Rev. H.W. Simpson, of Horsham and Bexhill. He was born in 1826, and entered the Navy in 1842, becoming a mate in 1847, and a lieutenant in the following year. His commander's commission bore date August 6, 1860, and he was six years in the rank before he was promoted a captain. He retired in 1880, and his advancement to the flag list was on the retired list. |
