5 March 1918 | ADMIRAL SIR CHARLES KNOWLES. The death occurred on Sunday at 3, Moreton-road, Oxford, of Vice-Admiral Sir Charles George Frederick Knowles. Bart., in his 86th year.Sir Charles Knowles was the only son of Sir Francis Charles Knowles, F.R.S., whom he succeeded as fourth baronet in 1802. He entered the Royal Navy in 1845, and was promoted captain in 1872. He retired in 1887, and became rear-admiral in 1889 and vice-admiral in 1894. He saw active service during the latter part of the Burmese War, 1852-3, and in 1864 commanded the Niger Expedition. He was thanked by the Admiralty for services on the coast of Cuba during the insurrection of 1870-71, and by the Colonial Office for services on the Newfoundland Fisheries in 1872. His son, Mr. Francis Howe Seymour Knowles, Physical Anthropologist to the Geological Survey, Canada, succeeds to the baronetcy. |
