HEARD. (Lieutenant, 1840.) Thomas Heard entered the Navy 9 April, 1826; passed his examination in 1832; and on 4 Nov. 1840 was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant as a reward for the services he had rendered on the coast of Syria and at the bombardment of St. Jean d’Acre. His appointments have since been – 15 Dec. 1840, to the Powerful 84, Capts. Sir Chas. Napier, Geo. Mansel, and Michael Seymour, in the Mediterranean – 25 May, 1842, as First, to the Albatross 16, Capt. Reginald Yorke, fitting at Portsmouth – 29 Nov. 1842, to the Samarang 26, Capt. Sir Edw. Belcher, employed as a surveying-vessel in the East Indies – next, as a Supernumerary, to the Agincourt 72, flag-ship of Sir Thos. John Cochrane, Commander-in-Chief on the latter station, where it appears he had charge of a gun-boat and was wounded at the capture and destruction, 19 Aug. 1845, of Maloodoo, a strong fortification in the possession of Scheriff Osman, a rebel Borneo chieftain – and, 27 Nov. 1845, as Senior, to the Wolf 18, Capt. Jas. Alex. Gordon, in which sloop he still serves in the East Indies. Agents – Messrs. Chard. |
