| 28 May 1869 | In our obituary yesterday [which I cannot find] was announced the death of Admiral Sir Charles Howe Fremantle, G.C.B., as having occurred on the 25th inst. at his residence in Grosvenor-street, in his 69th year. The deceased admiral was the second son of Admiral Sir Thomas Francis Fremantle, G.C.B., and, consequently, brother of the Right Hon. Sir Thomas Fremantle, chairman of the Board of Customs. He was born in 1800, and entered the navy at 13 years of age. He had seen sea service in the Mediterranean, at the Cape of Good Hope, and on the North-American station. He obtained distinction in the service from being appointed Admiral-Superintendent in Balaklava during the Crimean War, to which arduous post he was appointed June 18,1855, and remained there to the close of the war. In recognition of his professional services in the Crimea he was, in 1857, nominated a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. Admiral Fremantle was appointed Commander-in-chief at Devonport in October, 1863, which appointment he filed daring the usual period of five years. |
